UCC Wellness Committee - Water Safety Tips. Summer weather is a little earlier than expected and the weather is warmer now (spring) than in the past. However, that doesn’t mean the water is warm; it’s still very cold from melting snow. When the water temperature is cold, your body will fatigue much more quickly. The river currents are strong right now; even strong swimmers can struggle with the colder water temperatures. This time of the year, the water levels are a little higher and there is a greater risk of not being able to see debris under the water. For example, the Archie Creek fire has debris that have fallen into the river and is still working their way down. Hidden logs under the higher water and hidden tree limbs could grab shoe laces (not to say it will happen, just a precaution). If you are out on the water, life jackets are always important, no matter your age! Make sure you wear a properly fitted lifejacket (don’t use an adult size on a child).
