All-USA Academic Team
UCC nominates Jantyne Bunce and Brittany Eggers.
Roseburg, OR– Umpqua Community College has nominated two students; Jantyne Bunce and Brittany Eggers, for the 2017 All-USA Academic Team competition. The competition recognizes high-achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.
Bunce is a non-traditional student, who completed her Associate degree in Applied Science –Accounting in 2016. She is currently co-enrolled with Eastern Oregon University and is completing her Associate of Arts Transfer degree along with her Bachelor’s degree in Business with a focus in Accounting. She plans to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration, and certification as a Certified Public Accountant, eventually owning and operating her own accounting firm.
Bunce is a single parent who dropped out of high school when she became pregnant. Jantyne twice attempted to return to college before successfully completing her degree. In addition to her studies, Bunce currently serves as the President of the Alpha Sigma Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and is an officer with the Rocky Mountain Cascade Western for Phi Theta Kappa. She has been a UCC Student Ambassador and is currently a UCC Peer Mentor.
Eggers is a traditional student and part of the UCC Scholars program, which provides a tuition waiver to eligible high school students. Eggers is working on completing her Associate in Arts transfer degree along with prerequisites for a dental hygienist program. She is planning to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene at Oregon Institute of Technology. Eggers’ future plans include earning a master’s degree, for teaching in the field of Dental Hygiene.
Eggers, a Roseburg High School graduate, is currently serving as the Membership Officer for the Alpha Sigma Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and works part-time at the UCC Bookstore. She is an active volunteer at Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center, has been a volunteer with her church, and coached Lacrosse at her former high school.
The All-USA/All State Community College Academic Team will select twenty students in early 2017 for the national All-USA Community College Academic Team, with each receiving a $5,000 scholarship and recognition in the USA TODAY newspaper. As nominees to the All-USA Community College Academic Team, Bunce and Eggers will be recognized as a part of the All-Oregon Academic Team and will receive $1,000 scholarships. Both will also be considered for the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team and New Century Scholars.
The All-USA Academic Team competition is a national, annual event sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group and presented by USA TODAY with additional support provided by the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa.
