Honoring a History-Making Supporter

Del Blanchard at UCC

Blanchard served on the Board of Trustees from 1977 to 2009.

ROSEBURG, Oregon – Umpqua Community College (UCC) is paying tribute to one of its longest-running supporters. Myrtle Creek resident Del Blanchard passed away on Sunday, March 19, at the age of 88. Blanchard not only left his mark on UCC as the second-longest serving Trustee in the College’s history, the campus’ administration building also bears his name.

“[Del] served on the Board of Trustees for 32 years, which is an almost unheard of commitment and almost unmatched in Oregon,” Betty Tamm, the current Trustee representing Zone 1: North County, said. “There was never a question in my mind, nor the Board’s, that we needed to recognize Del. I know he was moved by the [building] naming. He was very humbled about his contributions and was honored that we recognized it.”

Blanchard served on the Board of Trustees from 1977 to 2009. In 2014, board members unanimously approved to rename the building the Del Blanchard Welcome Center. Fittingly, it is currently the building where UCC students take the first steps in their journeys through higher education.

In addition to Blanchard’s distinguished service to UCC, he was also a significant UCC Foundation donor. His legacy is recognized in two endowments that fund scholarships; one for GED-seeking students, the other for veterans reentering the workforce. Blanchard spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy, and believed in supporting educational opportunities for veterans who returned home.

“Del’s support for UCC and Douglas County will always be here,” Susan Taylor, UCC Foundation Executive Director, said. “Not only will his legacy always be felt on campus, the scholarship opportunities he has provided for past, present, and future UCC students will live on forever.”
