ROSEBURG, Oregon – The Office of Student Engagement at Umpqua Community College (UCC) will be hosting a virtual panel presentation on Thursday, Oct. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., in the Bonnie J. Ford Health, Nursing, and Science Center Room 201-202. Those interested are invited to participate in this live-streamed panel discussion called Twenty Years Later: A Conversation About the Life and Legacy of Matthew Shepard.

Presented by Rhode Island College, NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation, the panel features:

  • Judy Shepard, President, Matthew Shephard Foundation
  • Kevin Kruger, President, NASPA – Student Affairs Educators International
  • Sue Rankin, Principal and CEO, Rankin & Associates Consulting
  • Frank Sánchez, President, Rhode Island College

In October 1998, Judy and Dennis Shepard lost their 21-year-old son Matthew, then a student at the University of Wyoming, to a murder motivated by anti-gay hate. Matthew's death brought national attention to federal hate crime legislation. In 2009, the U.S. Congress passed the Matthew Shepard Act, which President Barack Obama signed into law.

Since Matthew's death, through the Matthew Shepard Foundation and work with legislators, colleges and universities, and communities, Judy and Dennis have carried on Matthew’s legacy, advancing dignity and justice for queer and trans communities.

This is a virtual panel presentation about how colleges and universities have changed during the past 20 years and how they must continue the work of creating safe and affirming campus climates. This is presented as live stream and no recording will be made.
